Vientiane is a natural starting or finishing point for one-way motorbike rentals across Laos. With three shops — Vientiane, Luang Prabang, and Pakse — you can ride the full length of the country without backtracking. Pick up in Vientiane and drop off in Pakse or Luang Prabang, or arrive in Vientiane at the end of a long ride from the north or south.

One-way routes from Vientiane:

  • Vientiane → Luang Prabang — ride north through Vang Vieng and the mountains of northern Laos
  • Vientiane → Pakse — ride south through Savannakhet and the central plains
  • Vientiane → Luang Prabang → Pakse — the full country crossing

See our one-way motorbike rental Laos guide for full details.

Popular Routes from Vientiane

As Laos’s capital and most accessible city, Vientiane connects easily to every corner of the country. It also has some of the best day trip and short loop riding in Laos on its doorstep.

Vientiane to Luang Prabang

The ride north from Vientiane to Luang Prabang via Vang Vieng is one of the most popular routes in Laos — dramatic karst scenery, good roads, and a natural stop in Vang Vieng for a night or two. The full distance is around 420km and suits riders of most experience levels. See our north–south route guide for more detail.

Day Trips from Vientiane

Vientiane has several rewarding day trip options by motorbike — Buddha Park (Xieng Khuan), Nam Ngum Reservoir, and the Ang Nam Ngum islands are all accessible within a few hours. See our day trips from Vientiane page for routes and distances.

Vientiane to Pakse & the Bolaven Plateau

Riding south from Vientiane takes you through Savannakhet and eventually to Pakse and the famous Bolaven Plateau Loop — one of the most celebrated motorbike routes in Southeast Asia. This is a natural fit for riders on a one-way rental finishing in Pakse. See our Pakse Loop guide for full details.

Crossing from Thailand

Vientiane is the easiest entry point into Laos from Thailand via the Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge at Nong Khai. Many riders fly into Bangkok or Udon Thani, cross the border, and pick up their bike in Vientiane — making it one of the most popular starting points for a Laos motorbike trip. Our team can advise on the border crossing process and documentation required.
