Popular Routes from Luang Prabang
Luang Prabang sits at the edge of northern Laos’s most dramatic riding country. The mountain roads here are among the best in Southeast Asia — remote, scenic, and far less travelled than equivalent routes in Vietnam or Thailand.
Northern Laos Loop — Nong Khiaw & Phonsavan
The roads north and east of Luang Prabang lead into some of the most spectacular mountain scenery in Laos. Nong Khiaw is around 150km northeast — a riverside town surrounded by towering limestone cliffs and a popular base for exploring the Nam Ou river valley. Further east, Phonsavan and the Plain of Jars make for a challenging but rewarding multi-day loop from Luang Prabang. See our northern Laos routes for recommended itineraries.
Luang Prabang to Vientiane via Vang Vieng
The 420km ride south to Vientiane via Vang Vieng is one of the classic Laos routes — winding mountain roads, karst valleys, and a natural overnight stop in Vang Vieng. This route is suitable for riders of most experience levels and is one of the most popular one-way rentals from our Luang Prabang shop. See our north–south route guide for more detail.
Day Trips from Luang Prabang
For shorter rides, Kuang Si Waterfall (30km south), the Pak Ou Caves (25km north by river road), and the weaving villages of Ban Xang Khong are all accessible on a half-day or day trip from the city. See our day trips from Luang Prabang page for routes and distances.
