We offer a variety of manual and semi automatic motorbikes for rent. Our most popular bikes are the enduro / dual sport bikes, The Honda CRF150L, Honda XR150L & XR190L, and Kawasaki KLX230S. This range is ideal for a single rider on the challenging Laos roads.
Where can I rent a motorbike in Laos?
We have 3 shops across Laos; We have shops in Luang Prabang in the North, Vientiane, The Capital in central Laos, and Pakse in the South. You can rent a bike and drop it off at any of our shops, meaning you can rent one way across all of Laos.
What bike should I rent in Laos?
We have a great choice of bikes for all levels of rider. Our most popular bike for beginners is the Yamaha PG-1 – the cheapest bike we offer, a semi automatic scooter that is easy to ride and will comfortably carry 1 person.
We offer manual, off-road options like the Honda CRF150L and Honda XR150L, which is suitable for someone with some riding experience, and larger engine options like the Kawasaki KLX 230S, Royal Enfield Himalayan 450, and the Honda CB500X, both of which we only offer to experienced riders.
Where can I drop off my bike once I’m finished?
You can drop off your rental motorbike at any of our shops in Luang Prabang, Vientiane or Pakse. This means that you can rent one way between any of our shops. There is no drop off fee in these shops.
What is included in my rental?
Every rental includes a luggage rack, bungee cords, bike lock, phone holder, USB charger, basic helmet, map and a copy of the registration. All of the basics that you need.
We also have lots of optional extras such as European helmets, motorbike jackets, gloves and other protection.
The larger bikes also come with side panniers and wireless charging phone holders.
You can see all the details for each bike on their own pages.
How does the deposit work?
We have 2 options for the deposit.
Passport – If you leave a passport as a deposit, then it needs to be the passport with the Vietnam visa. It is then sent to the shop that you are going to finish at. This is sent via recorded delivery and it is safe.
Cash or Card – The deposit can be paid in cash or card but with a 3% surcharge fee on card. The deposit is always refunded in cash though and we can only guarantee VND if you pay in VND or Card. In cash then this can be in any currency as we simply return the deposit at the end for you. If this is at another of our locations we send the cash to that shop.
Can I get a damage waiver with a Laos motorbike rental?
Yes, we offer an optional breakdown warranty with our motorbike rentals. This means that upon returning the bike there is no need to worry about the potential costs of an accident or damage to the bike. Meaning the price of the rental is even clearer and the risk of costs is minimal.
What happens if the bike is damaged?
Renters are responsible for damage to the bike. You will be charged for any damage once the bike is returned. Any repairs done outside of our shops must be communicated and agreed by us, or you will be charged to bring these up to standard.
Do I need a drivers license to rent a motorbike in Laos?
Yes, you should have a 1949 International Drivers Permit with motorbike stamp and a matching domestic Drivers License with motorbike stamp to ride in Laos.
But, you are very unlikely to be asked for this at any point in your trip.
What should I do if the police stop me when on a motorbike?
It is unlikely that you will be stopped by the police in Laos but it can happen. This will normally be when you have done something wrong, such as driving through a red light, the wrong way up a one way street or speeding.
If this happens a small fine will normally be issued. We recommend being friendly and patient as the police can choose the fine less than the normal price.
Can I take a motorbike on the bus or train in Laos?
The trains in Laos do not take motorbikes.
The buses are possible for smaller bikes if space is available but these are not easy to arrange, not that frequent and often they will refuse.
Trucks will take bikes but prices will vary greatly and can be hard to arrange as well.
It is not as easy as Vietnam to arrange taking a bike via other transport and you should never planned that you will need to do this.
Can I Rent a Motorbike for 2 People In Laos?
Yes, there are bikes which can take 2 people in Laos. The larger cc adventure bikes, Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 and Honda CB500X can do this as well as the Honda XR190L.
But the road conditions in Laos make it much harder to ride with 2 people on the bike. If you are both able to ride bikes then you should be getting 2 bikes. It would only be recommended if someone really is unable to ride their own bikes.
Can I Rent an Automatic for Travelling all of Laos?
No, we do not offer or recommend automatics for long trips in Laos. In the mountains then the automatics do not have engine braking so you are relying on just the brakes which can overheat and fail. This can happen and unfortunately does happen.
Semi automatics are a much safer alternative and also easy to ride. We can show you if you are experienced with automatics already.
The mud, pot holes and water all combine to make some roads impossible for automatics. Limiting where you can go in the country and taking away from the freedom the bike is giving you.
Can I Take a Motorbike from Laos to Vietnam?
Unfortunately you are not able to take a motorbike from Laos to Vietnam. The border is now closed to bikes in both directions. This is one of the reasons that we have expanded into Laos so that we can offer 2 separate rentals for customers looking to explore both of these countries.
You can see about our Vietnam motorbike rentals by clicking here.
Can I Take a Motorbike from Laos to Cambodia?
The border with Cambodia is not possible to cross with motorbikes from Laos. Before Covid there were ways to take bikes over the river with the help of locals but these ways were illegal then and are now no longer even offered.
Is 150cc enough for Laos?
Yes, 150cc is enough for all of Laos. The road conditions in Laos mean that you are generally travelling slow so having just 150cc is enough. We offer larger cc bikes for those looking for more power but they are not needed.
We even have a 115cc Yamaha PG-1 which is still enough power for 1 person to conquer all of Laos.
How Can I Pay in Laos?
Cash is king. In the countryside then you will need to pay in cash. Laos has a QR system for banking but this is aimed for local banks and people, not tourists. Having a supply of cash with you is always best.
Thai Baht and USD are both easiest to exchange in the large cities with money exchange booths or banks but this takes longer and requires a passport.
ATMs are common but there can be limits and a small fee for each withdrawal.
But at Style Motorbikes we accept USD, Euro, AUD and GBP in cash. We also accept cards but with a 3% surcharge fee so it is not suggested.
